CHAPTER ELEVEN
Zeke
I didn’t know what it was about Morgan, but every time I was around the kid, my body lit like a match to dry wood. And yeah, he didn’t like it when I called him a kid, but he was only nineteen. I had eight fucking years on him. Eight years of hard living that someone like Morgan couldn’t begin to imagine. Yet, he’d been the one explaining sexuality to me the night before, and sometimes I thought he’d learned more important things in his nineteen years than I had in my twenty-seven.
Labeling myself as bisexual was surprisingly freeing, as though sorting myself into a group proved I wasn’t alone in this. Lying beside Morgan, his leg draped over mine, my father’s and brother’s voices in my head calling me a faggot and a pansy held less sting. It was like I didn’t care so much anymore because I felt so damn good. What did it matter what my pop and brothers would say if they were here? They weren’t here, and, although I’d tried to stop myself, the fact was I wanted to be with Morgan.
Unknown to anyone but myself, I’d gone to two performances of The Nutcracker, sitting stiffly in the audience dressed in a suit I’d borrowed from a friend. The first time, because I’d arrived late and hadn’t yet looked at the program, I hadn’t realized Morgan was behind the mask of the Nutcracker until he’d taken it off and became the prince, wearing a glittering gold jacket and soft boots and not a hell of a lot else. Not for the first time, I’d thought, no wonder they call them tights. My eyes had been riveted to Morgan’s muscular ass for several long moments before I’d been able to lean back and enjoy the performance.
I’d known from watching rehearsals that those graceful moves were not as simple as they appeared for any of the dancers onstage. Even when Morgan was simply lifting the ballerina, he had to exert a lot of strength and poise to make it appear so effortless. I’d found myself annoyed by the look of adoration on his face when he’d looked at the girl, even though I’d known it was all an act. Morgan was gay and definitely not in love with the chick playing Clara. In fact, I knew she was married to another dancer in the company.
Before becoming Morgan’s bodyguard, I’d thought all male dancers were gay; but “Clara” was married to the guy Morgan was replacing in the part of the prince. That a straight guy would want to dance ballet had boggled my mind at first, but after watching day after day, I’d sort of been able to see what the allure was. I mean, these men were constantly surrounded by beautiful, fit women, and they did things with their bodies that had to feel as rewarding as any sport. Ballet certainly gave them terrific physiques. When I’d mentioned this to Morgan, he’d pointed out that some footballs players had improved their games by learning the basics of ballet.
